WordDex Open Source and Dictionary Credits

WordDex uses a bundled local dictionary made from source-reviewed open data, WordDex-authored definitions, generated word-form entries, geography data, icons, fonts, and open-source software libraries.

Dictionary Source Policy

WordDex word cards are edited to read naturally for players. Source attribution is kept in this credits page and in internal source records rather than repeated on every word card.

WordDex does not knowingly ship copied definitions from proprietary dictionaries such as macOS Dictionary, Apple Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary, or similar closed sources.

WordNet

WordDex uses dictionary data and synonym structure derived from Princeton WordNet database files, including WordNet 3.1 data files in current build records.

WordNet 3.0 copyright 2006 belongs to Princeton University. WordNet is used under its license terms, which permit use, copying, modification, and distribution with required copyright and disclaimer notices. WordNet is provided by Princeton as-is, without warranties, and Princeton does not endorse WordDex.

Webster 1913

WordDex includes some definitions matched to Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) as distributed by Project Gutenberg. These entries are tracked with internal source tags and may be lightly normalized for punctuation or player readability.

Project Gutenberg states that this eBook is public domain in the United States. Users outside the United States should check local copyright rules before redistributing the source text.

GeoNames

WordDex includes geography entries derived from GeoNames data, including country, city, capital, region, and selected physical-geography records.

GeoNames data is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. WordDex uses selected one-word records and rewrites compact player-facing descriptions. GeoNames data is provided without accuracy or completeness guarantees.

WordDex Definitions and Generated Forms

Some definitions are maintained directly in the WordDex dictionary. Some inflected forms, plurals, past tense forms, gerunds, and related word-form entries are generated from WordDex rules and manually reviewed over time.

Reviewed Dictionary Entries

Older imported rows are tracked in internal source records. For launch, the remaining legacy provenance bucket was source-compared, reviewed, or rewritten into WordDex-reviewed entries so every shipped word has an approved source path under the current engineering policy.

Software Libraries

WordDex uses open-source software libraries through the React Native, Expo, Supabase, RevenueCat, AdMob, and related JavaScript/native app ecosystem. Individual package licenses are retained in package metadata and distribution records where applicable.
